Shakespeare

“To be, or not to be, that is the question.” Surely, that is one of the most famous lines from any dramatic play ever written. And of course everyone knows that the author of the line was William Shakespeare. Or was it?

Most scholars of Elizabethan literature agree that William Shakespeare wrote the plays and sonnets that are credited to him. But every now and then, a new essay or book is published that says it has proof that someone else, not Shakespeare, was the author of such classics as Romeo and Juliet, Othello, and Hamlet.

The people who challenge Shakespeare’s authorship are called anti-Stratfordians, a reference to Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon. Doubting Shakespeare first became popular in the middle of the 19th century. By this time, Shakespeare had become an international icon; many said he was the greatest writer of all time. To some, this seemed unbelievable. Anti-Stratfordians argue that Shakespeare lacked the education and aristocratic experience needed to write plays like Richard III and Julius Caesar. Over the centuries, a number of important public figures have been persuaded by these arguments, including Mark Twain, Charlie Chaplin, and Sigmund Freud.

The three most popular theories are that Shakespeare’s plays were written by a group of writers, or by another professional writer of the time, or by a member of the nobility who did not want his name associated with the theater. This third theory is the basis for a 2011 movie titled Anonymous. This film argues that Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford, was the real author of Shakespeare’s plays. The movie is full of intrigue and mystery, centered on a plot against Queen Elizabeth I. In order to save his son from execution, de Vere agrees to never reveal that he is the true Shakespeare. The movie received mixed reviews from both film critics and audiences, and few were persuaded by the anti-Stratfordian theory.

While few people really believe Shakespeare did not write his plays, there is new evidence that he did sometimes work with other authors. This was a very common practice at the time. Shakespeare was a practical businessman as well as theater artist, and co-writing his plays would have just been the smart thing to do.

Unit 2 «Let the music begin…»

Part I. Listening (16 points-max)

Tapescript

Task 1. Listen to the tape about Mike’s favorite composer and answer if these statements are true or false.

When I have a free time, I often listen to music of different genres. Classical music is the best remedy when I want to relax.

My favourite composer is Antonio Vivaldi. I especially like his series of violin concerts known as “The Four Seasons”. Vivaldi was born on March 4th 1678, in Venice. He was quickly baptized due to his poor health. He had five other siblings. His father, Giovanni Battista, taught him to play the violin at the very young age. Afterwards, they toured Venice together playing music for people.

By the age of 24 Antonio had the extensive knowledge of music. He then started teaching it and soon he presented his first performance for the French Embassy. At the same period he started conducting the orchestra and staging numerous concerts. In 1725 he published a cycle of compositions called “The Contest between Harmony and Invention”. His “Four Seasons” were also included in this cycle. His music then was full of drama.

In fact, Vivaldi made great contributions in the field of ensemble and orchestral music. His violin-based works were marked by virtuosity. The complete collection of these works was published only in the 20th century. The political situation in Europe was rather harsh at the first half of the 18th century and it influenced Vivaldi’s work.

In 1740 he arrived in Vienna, where he wrote several other compositions, but they were not marked as popular. He died in July of the next year, forgotten and sick. However, his work “Four Seasons” became a significant contribution in the development of instrumental music. This melody will keep the memory of the great composer for a long time.

Part II. Reading (19 points-max)

Task 3.Read the text and decide if the statements given below are true/false or not stated.

My name is Tom Stuart. Music is an essential part of my life. I simply can’t imagine how people live without music. Even though I like all types of music, be it classical or pop, my favourite style is alternative rock.

The bands that I listen to include Linkin Park, Radiohead, Evanescence, Muse, Placebo and some others. One of my favourite bands of all times is Evanescence. I have their several albums on my MP3 player, so I often listen to them on different occasions. I listen to their songs at home, on a way to school, when I’m sad, when I’m bored, or simply when I need to relax. No wonder that all their songs are brilliant and popular. The lead vocalist of the band is Amy Lee. She is a multi-talented person. Apart from singing, she writes songs and plays the piano.

There is one song in her repertoire, which I like more than any other song in the world. It’s called “Bring me to life”. David Hodges and Ben Moody helped her to write this song. It became the debut single from the album “Fallen” (2003). A mixture of genres can be heard in it. First of all, it’s alternative metal. There are also the elements of rap rock and gothic metal.

In my opinion, the song is rather meaningful and catchy. At first, I simply liked the melody, but after translating the lyrics, I understood that it has deep implication. The lead singer later confessed that “Bring me to life” was inspired by her long-time friend Josh Hartzler. Regardless the critical response, this song soon became popular and won a Grammy Award.

8. Brief biographical facts

A. Everyone who comes to Vienna can feel the very special atmosphere of the city. It is the capital and the largest city of Austria. Its population is only about 1.8 million, but millions of people from other countries come to Vienna every year. They come to see Vienna’s beautiful gardens and palaces, and to listen to the beautiful music. Vienna is the city of Mozart and Haydn. Beethoven spent 35 years of his life in Vienna and considered it his home.

B. Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer and pianist who greatly influenced European music. He was born in 1770 in Bonn, into the family of a court musician. No one is completely sure of the date of his birth but it is known that he was baptized on December-17, 1770. At the age of 21, Beethoven moved to Vienna and never went back to the town of his birth. He created a great number of musical compositions and was a famous figure in the artistic world. He died in 1827 in Vienna after a long illness.

C. There were seven children in Ludwig van Beethoven’s family but only the three boys survived. Ludwig was the oldest of them. The father worked as a musician at the court in Bonn and he was his son’s first music teacher. He was a strict teacher and had ambitions of making his son “a new Mozart”. The mother was a kind and gentle woman and Ludwig always referred to her as his best friend. Young Ludwig was a gifted child and he gave his first public performance at the age of seven.

D. From time to time young Ludwig van Beethoven had to replace his father as a musician at the court of Bonn. The influential people at the court, and even the Royals, noticed the talented musician and sent him to Vienna to continue his musical education. Vienna was the main city in terms of culture and music in those times. Beethoven took lessons with the greatest musicians. Some historians say that Mozart was impressed by his abilities, but there is actually no proof that Mozart and Beethoven ever actually met in person.

E. Ludwig van Beethoven had a lot of admirers among aristocrats and even members of European royal families. When Beethoven wanted to leave Vienna, the wealthiest people of the city gave him an annual grant of 4,000 florins. That money was enough to forget about any financial problems. The only condition was that Beethoven would stay in Vienna. The grant made him the world’s first independent composer who could write what he wanted and when he wanted.

F. In Vienna, Beethoven’s career was very successful and his social life was very intense. Everyone admired the talented young composer. However, at some moments of his life Ludwig felt desperately unhappy. In his late twenties he realized that he was going deaf. Beethoven took it as the greatest unfairness of life — the musician who could not live without music was going to lose the ability to hear it. Unfortunately, the deafness was getting worse and worse but even that did not prevent him from writing brilliant music. He heard it in his mind.

G. Ludwig van Beethoven was probably the most famous and influential figure in the world of music of his time. It was the time of the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in European music. His best-known compositions include 9 symphonies, 5 piano concertos, 1 violin concerto, 32 piano sonatas, and one opera, Fidelio. It is a curious fact that Beethoven composed only one opera, which he re-wrote several times, and it took him years to complete it.

The best picture

When Sebastian was a boy at school, his favourite lesson was art, and he won several prizes for it. Once he left school, he got a position as a clerk in a bank, but three times a week he went to evening classes in art, and whenever he had time at the weekends, he painted.

He painted in a very modern manner – mysterious objects and shapes, women with three pink eyes, large blank areas, and so on.

After a few months he thought, “Perhaps I call sell some of my pictures and get enough money to afford to leave the bank and became a real artist. Then I can travel around as much as I like, and go to foreign museums, and see other artists ‘paintings, and study in other countries when I feel like it. Though I try to make the best of the job and I don’t regard the work as difficult – at least not at present – I don’t like life in a bank. I only enjoy painting”.

In the bank, Sebastian sometimes had to deal with a man who owned a picture shop, and after he had had a few conversations with him, Sebastian invited him to his home one evening to see some of his works. “Then perhaps you could tell me whether I can really be a good artist and get some money from my painting,” Sebastian said hopefully.

The man said he was prepared to come and see what he thought of Sebastian’ work, so he arrived one evening at Sebastian’s home. Sebastian took the man to his studio and started to show him some of his pictures, with some pride and hope.

The man looked at them one after the other while Sebastian watched his face, but to Sebastian’s disappointment the man did not say anything, and his expression did not change at any of them either.

Then, when he had finished, he looked around, and his glance fell on something else. A happy look came over his face for the first time, and he said, “Now I like this one very much! It’s so full of deep feeling! I’m sure I could sell this one for you.

Контрольная работа по английскому языку № 3 (9 класс). Вариант 1.

I. Установите соответствия между текстами и заголовками. Один заголовок лишний.

1. Alaska in the past                                                                  5. Winter sporting activities

  1. Hopes seldom come true                                                       6. The deal of the century

  2. Close neighbours                                                                   7. Back to nature

  3. A mistaken opinion                                                         8. Popular tourist routes

 A. Alaska and Russia are less than 3 miles apart at their closest point in the Bering Strait. In winter, it is possible to walk across the ice from one country to the other. Alaskan and Russian natives on either side of the Bering Strait carry on active border trade and visit each other. Nowadays the University of Alaska has more Russian students than any other university in the United States.

 B. The name of the largest American state comes from the Aleut language for ‘great land’. Native American people — Inuits, Yupik Inuits and Aleuts — have lived in Alaska for thousands of years. Life in Alaska has always been difficult, but they learned to adapt to the harsh climate. They lived by hunting seals, whales and bears and by fishing. They used sledge pulled by dogs to travel over the snow-covered land, and lived in igloos — houses made of snow.

 C. The territory of Alaska was purchased from the Russians for $7.2 million (very cheaply). Alaska was considered to be a frozen wasteland and nobody could imagine that it would turn out to be one of the United States’ richest resources for gold and oil. For many years the Americans called the buying of Alaska ‘Seward’s Folly’, after Secretary of State William H. Seward, who arranged the purchase in 1867.

 D. Most tourists expect to find the Alaskans still living in igloos and leading an isolated life on the snowy plain. To their surprise, the Alaskans’ daily life does not differ much from life in the central parts of the country. Most Alaskans live in modern homes, drive cars, watch TV, and shop in modern stores. Alaska’s communities have restaurants, theatres, museums, and modern health care facilities. The real life in Alaska is much less exotic than it is described in books and films.

 E. The discovery of gold in 1896 started a huge Gold Rush that brought thousands of people to Alaska. All the adventurers wanted to make a fortune, but many died of cold and hunger on their way to the gold-field. And very few of those who survived managed to find the gold. The famous writer Jack London tried his chance in Alaska too, and many of his books were influenced by his personal experience.

 F. The small Alaskan town of Gustavus is an interesting community. The town’s 400 citizens are a mix of professional people — doctors, lawyers, former government workers and artists. For various reasons they decided to drop out of the stressful city life and live on their own in the middle of the woods. Electricity only arrived in the early 1980s and in some homes they still get water from a pump and make a fire to heat water to wash in.

 G. Iditarod, one of Alaska’s most famous events, takes place in early March. It is the 1,100-mile sled dog race from Anchorage, the capital of Alaska, to Nome, a city on the coast of the Bering Sea. The race is very popular and the winners and their teams of dogs become local celebrities. Downhill and cross-country skiing as well as skijoring (when skiers are pulled by one or two dogs) are very popular in Alaska too.

 A. Geographically, the Wild West refers to the states west of the Mississippi River. The American West is both a place and an idea. In people’s minds, it was a place that promised excitement because it was new and unknown. From the middle of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century, lots of people pushed their way westward trying to find land, better lives, gold and silver, and, sometimes, to escape the law.

 B. Due to books and films, the first thing that comes to mind about the American West is cowboys, rodeos and riding broncos. Bronco is the nickname for a wild horse. New citizens of the state capital, Denver, were attracted to the city by its location in the Rocky Mountains and its clean air.  E. In 1935, the federal government selected St. Louis, Missouri, as the site for a new national monument – The Gateway Arch. The memorial, also known as the Gateway to the West, was to honor the pioneers exploring the American West. Another of Mark Twain’s famous works, the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, tells us about a journey down the river.

 G. Hawaii is the USA’s 50th state. It’s a popular holiday destination for the citizens, as well as for foreign tourists.

1.

Coffee in the New World

2.

The original taste of coffee

3.

A chance discovery

4.

A place for communication

5.

An illegal drink

6.

A long journey to Europe

7.

Growing coffee plants

8.

Different recipes

A.

Coffee was first found in Eastern Africa in the area we know today as Ethiopia. A popular legend says that one day a man called Kaldi was watching his goats eating grass and leaves. He noticed that after eating berries from a certain bush the goats became very active. Curious, Kaldi tried the berries himself. He found that these berries gave him additional energy. The story quickly spread throughout the region.

B.

The first coffee berries were transported from Ethiopia to Arabian countries and then they were cultivated in Yemen. From there, coffee travelled to Turkeywhere coffee beans were roasted for the first time over open fires. The roasted beans were crushed and then boiled in water, creating the drink we enjoy today. Finally, in the seventeenth century coffee arrived in France, Britain and Italy.

C.

The first coffeehouses opened in Mecca and quickly became popular centres of social and political activity. The government believed that coffee stimulated radical thinking, and the governor even thought it might unite his opposition. As a result, coffee was forbidden in Mecca. The same thing happened in Turkey a century later, when coffee drinkers were severely punished.

D.

They say, in 1776 the thirteen American colonies adopted coffee as their national drink instead of tea. When the British tried to raise the tax on tea, Americans refused to buy it and switched to coffee. In fact, by drinking coffee Americans demonstrated their political views and their dislike for the British – the famous tea-lovers.

E.

The Italians drink their espresso with sugar, the Germans and Swiss add an equal part of hot chocolate, the Mexicans prefer it with cinnamon, and the Belgians – with chocolate. Coffee drinkers in the Middle East usually add cardamom and spices. The Egyptians, on the other hand, are extremely fond of pure, strong coffee. They add neither milk nor cream.

F.

Plain and simple, nothing else. People discovered that if they drank coffee slowly they could taste bitterness, sourness, sweetness and saltiness. For a long time such a taste was new and more than enough. It needed no improvement. Only later did they start experimenting with coffee by adding milk, chocolate, and other flavors. However, nothing can hide the taste of real coffee.

G.

When the first European coffeehouses opened, they quickly grew into places where people played chess, exchanged gossip, sang and danced. Coffeehouses were very popular because anyone could go and enjoy a cup of the drink. The price of a cup of coffee was reasonable. European coffeehouses became meeting points for intellectuals, writers and businessmen.
