Hosting EXPO-2017 International Specialized Exhibition in Astana is one of the key projects of Kazakhstan. The initiative to host a large scale event in the capital of the country belongs to President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
On June 10, 2011 Kazakhstan’s bid was officially presented in Paris to the Secretary General of the International Exhibitions Bureau (IEB) Vincent Gonzales Loscertales. From that moment on, Kazakhstan officially joined the competition to host EXPO-2017 in Astana.
On June 12, 2012 official presentation of Astana’s bid to host EXPO-2017 was held at the 151st General Assembly of the IEB in Paris, which included a video address of the President of Kazakhstan. In his speech, Nursultan Nazarbayev said the country would make every effort for the successful organisation of exhibition in its capital city.
The theme of the exhibition is the “Energy of the Future” and is dedicated to the alternative energy sources and “green” technologies.
On November 22, 2012 as a result of secret ballot voting, which involved 161 member states of the International Exhibitions Bureau, Astana was chosen as the venue to host EXPO-2017, receiving 103 votes. Thus, EXPO-2017 will be the first exhibition to be hosted by the member country of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
The World Exhibition in Astana will last 3 months. It will be open to some 100 countries and about 10 international organizations. It is expected that more than 2 million people will visit the exhibition.
The theme of EXPO-2017 “Energy Future” will let to attract the world’s best energy-saving technologies, technological advances and existing renewable alternative energy sources.
The exhibition will provide a powerful impetus to diversification of economy and technological upgrading of production facilities along with the scientific grounds of the country. The preparation for such a big event involves the domestic small and medium enterprises, including into the construction of exhibition facilities and infrastructure.
During the days of EXPO-2017, Astana will be filled with the spirit of different cultures from all over the world. Every day various concerts, shows and other entertainment activities will be held at the exhibition.
On November 26, 2012 President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed the Decree №436 “On the establishment of the State Commission for the preparation and holding of the International Specialized Exhibition EXPO-2017”.
In April 2014, the President launched the construction of EXPO-2017 exhibition complex located near the Nazarbayev University.
The complex will comprise 4,000 apartments, a new hotel, a Congress Hall, and an indoor city stretching from the university to the center. The exhibition area will involve the national pavilion of Kazakhstan, as well as international, thematic and corporate pavilions. There will be located shopping malls, entertainment and service facilities as well. The total area of the exhibition stands at 174 hectares.
The facilities will be maintained with the help of the energy-saving technologies. The buildings will be certified according to the BREEM international standards.
After the exhibition the facilities of EXPO-2017 will be used for the new financial center titled Astana that will also have a special status.
Kazakhstan is a member of the International Exhibitions Bureau since 1997 and has been taking part in EXPO since 2005.

Specialized international exhibition EXPO-2017 enlisted by the best tourist guides and top 50 awaited events of the world will take place from June 10 to September 10, 2017 in Astana. For the period of 93 days Kazakhstan will hold one of the most grandiose holidays of the tourist season. 115 countries and 18 international organizations have confirmed their participation. It is expected that the event will be visited by up to 5 mln people from all over the world.
EXPO-2017 that will take place under slogan "Future Energy" will highlight alternative sources of energy, one of the most important themes the world is concerned about. Bright and concise logo of the EXPO-2017 embodies the theme of the exhibition: asymmetrically located leaves in a circle symbolize energy and perpetual motion. The exhibition will demonstrate ideas and solutions on energy recycling sources and implementation of the principle "green economy": buildings, that generate energy for self-provision, "smart houses", electric cars, automobiles on bio fuel and others.
For EXPO-2017, there are 23 hotels will be launched in Astana accommodating 2829 people, thus expanding their number up to 187 hotels. Apart from that, a railway station has been deployed to serve 4500 people a day and a new airport terminal was built with four gates and the capacity of serving 1500 passengers at a rush hour.

Special attention is given to security: 9000 policemen, 5000 doctors will be involved, 20000 different signalization sensors, about 2100 CCTVs will be used.
Moreover, the program "Recommended by EXPO-2017" has been launched in Astana to offer the first-class service during the event. Under the program, requirements to the level of service were developed with the consideration of valid legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan and international experience.
Scientists, historians, geographers took part in preparing guides for EXPO-2017, who had shared their best experience and interesting information on Astana and Kazakhstan.

General area of the EXPO-2017 exhibition complex is huge: it equals to 174 hectares or 1.74 square kilometers. 25 hectares out of it is given to exhibition zone that will place National pavilion of Kazakhstan, international, thematic and corporate pavilions. The rest of the area is occupied by a conference-centre, press-centre, indoor city, residential houses and hotels, trade and entertainment facilities. All of the new facilities are subject to the main theme of the exhibition - "Future energy".
National pavilion of Kazakhstan, built in the shape of the sphere, is a gem of architectural achievements of EXPO-2017. Latest technologies are used the pavilion’s work. Thus, energy consumption in the building will be reduced thanks to functioning of two silent wind generators.
The National Pavilion divided into two major zones occupies the base of the Sphere on the area of 5000 square meters. The first zone is an introduction to Kazakhstan; it will present landscapes, culture, past, present and future of the country. In the zone "Creative energy" the best projects of local scientists on "green economy" will be demonstrated.
Each level of the Sphere will be specialized in a separate theme of energetics- space, sun, wind, biomasses, water and kinesthetic energy. The last level will show Astana of the future- the way it will be in 2050.
The pavilion "Best Practices Zone" will demonstrate 25-30 best world practices in the sphere of production, preservation and transportation of renewable sources of energy. The concluding part is "General zones" dedicated to the conceptual basis of future energy.

On June 10, 2017 the International Specialized Exhibition “Astana EXPO-2017” will open its doors. 100 countries and more than 10 international organizations will take part in the preparation of the pavilions.

It is expected that the exhibition will be visited by 2 million tourists, and the total number of visits will be about 5 million. It is planned that 85% of the total number of visitors will be citizens of Kazakhstan, and 15% - foreign nationals, most of which will come from the CIS countries and China. The total area of Astana EXPO-2017 exhibition complex is 174 hectares, it is planned to build a total of 35 facilities here. The exhibition area will house National Pavilion of Kazakhstan, international, theme-based and company pavilions, trade and entertainment facilities. In the non-exhibition zone it is planned to build a conference center, press center, indoor city, residential buildings and hotels.
The main building of EXPO is the National Pavilion of Kazakhstan, which will be constructed in the form of a sphere with the use of the most advanced technologies. On the main facility called “Sphere” the advanced photovoltaic technology will be used allowing to produce electrical energy without disturbing the planned futuristic design. The pavilion will be provided with the reduced power consumption from the grid. This technology will be presented by two silent wind turbines, which can be installed in the city and the work of which does not depend on wind direction and fluctuation.
Thematic concept of the Sphere is presented as a “Museum of Future Energy”. In the foundation of the Sphere on the area of 5,000 square meters there will be the National Pavilion divided into two main zones. The zone of insight into Kazakhstan will introduce visitors to the landscape, culture, history, present days and future of Kazakhstan. In the zone called “Creative Energy” best projects of national scientists will be presented devoted to the topic “Green Economy”.
On eight levels of Sphere visitors will get to know various directions in the field of energy - energy of the space, the sun and wind, biomass, water, and kinetic energy. The last level will tell visitors about the future of Astana - the capital of Kazakhstan in 2050.
In addition, the "Astana EXPO-2017" will present the Best Practices Area - Pavilion where 25-30 international best practices in the field of production, preservation, and transportation of renewable energy sources will be presented. The last area, where the theme of the exhibition will be demonstrated, will be called Public Areas. They will focus on the conceptual framework of Energy of the Future, and will, thus, continue telling about the topics of EXPO.

Since the first exhibition in 1851 in London, Expo has been expanding the boundaries of our capabilities and opening new horizons in maintaining sustainable development and advanced solutions to international problems.
For more than 150-year history of EXPO exhibitions, visitors witnessed the creation of such inventions as telephone and the X-ray machines, observation wheel, zipper, nylon, ice cream cones, mobile telephone and touch screen!
For the host cities, the international exhibitions are a wonderful opportunity to make a step forward to the future.
