Tony Redford was a journalist. He wrote articles for a magazine called Business News. He was a young man, of medium height. He had rather long, dark brown hair and a small moustache. There was always a very serious look on his face. He looked even more serious that morning. He was in his boss’s office. His boss was called Liz Davis and she was the editor of Business News.

«Well, Tony. Your first article about the electronics industry is going to the printer’s this afternoon. It’s very interesting. But what about your second article? Though no one is absolutely certain about the US flag’s origins, many believe that today’s American flag evolved from a British naval (морской ) flag used in the colonies. That flag had a Union Jack in the upper left corner and a red field upon which six white stripes were imposed to make a total of thirteen stripes, for the thirteen colonies under King George. After the American colonies declared their independence, thirteen stars replaced the Union Jack. Then Congress decided to settle on a flag with thirteen stripes , to represent the original colonies, and the stars to represent all the states in the growing union. And only about one hundred years later all the details of the modern flag were finalized. Congress decided that the stars were to be five-pointed. Stars have been added as new states joined the US. The fiftieth state, Hawaii, was admitted in 1960.

In the official coat of arms, the shield ( щит ) in its four quarters shows the lions of England in the first and fourth, the lion of Scotland in the second and harp of Ireland in the third. The shield is surrounded by a garter (подвязка) and the motto on it ( Honi soit qut mal y pence ) means “ Evil be to him who Evil thinks”. These symbolize the Order of the Garter, an ancient order of knighthood, of which the Queen is Sovereign. The shield, above which appears the royal crown, is supported by the English lion and the Scottish unicorn.

The motto across the bottom of the coat of arms ( Dieu et mon Droit ) means “ God and my Right” and is the motto of the Sovereign.

Summer jobs in children’s camps.

Camp America is an organisation that runs over 12,000 children’s summer camps in the USA. All the camps are in the countryside and some are in areas of outstanding natural beauty. Different types of camps are available. While some are designed mainly for sports activities, others are suitable for children with different interests. Accommodation is provided at the majority of camps but some children attend during the day and return home in the evening.

1 ___________________________

Camp America offers a variety of summer jobs for young people. Some allow you to work directly with children teaching sport, dancing or arts and require relevant qualifications. There are other jobs working with children, however, that do not require special skills or qualifications. In these roles you help to run activities and take care of children after organised events have finished.

If you do not want to work with children, there are other jobs available such as office work, laundry work and food preparation. You do not have responsibility for any children in these roles, so you often have more free time in the evenings.

2 ___________________________

You can make paper or online applications for summer camp jobs. To complete a paper application you need to write to us requesting a form, which you then need to complete and return. We will send you a list of interviewers located in your area and you need to select one to arrange a convenient time for an interview. You can apply online by visiting our ‘How to Apply Section’ on our main website. Here you can fill out your application form and select an interviewer.

3 ___________________________

There are certain general requirements that all applicants must meet: you must be 18 years of age or older, speak fluent English, and be able to provide two references. It is also essential that you are available for work for a minimum of nine weeks, and be able to leave for the USA no later than June 28 and return no earlier than August 24.

4 ___________________________

If you are successful at interview, we will inform you immediately where you will be working in the USA. We will also help you with your visa application. This involves attending an interview at the US embassy in your home country. You will also have to pay the embassy fee for visa applications. The fee is currently $100 but can increase without notice.

5 ___________________________

We arrange your free return flights and your transfer by bus from the airport to your summer camp. While you are working at the camp you receive pocket money and free accommodation and food. Teenagers have their own TV channels, websites and magazines. So what about books?

Last year one publisher, Martins, started publishing a series called Waves. We spoke to the director Julia Smith. She explained, ‘Teenage fiction has been published since the 1970s but publishers have never been particularly successful in getting teenagers to buy and read books. Now they’re realising that teenagers aren’t just older children but they’re not adults either and often aren’t interested in adult fiction. For this series we’re looking for new writers who write especially for teenagers.’

Athene Gorr’s novel was published in the series last year and is selling well. Its title is The Purple Ring. She says, ‘The important thing is to persuade teenagers to pick up your book. I’m a new writer so, although I’ve got an unusual name which people might remember, nobody knows it yet! But my book has a fantastic cover which makes people want to look inside. Then they realise what a brilliant story it is!’

And what do teenagers themselves think about the series? We talked to Sophie Clarke, aged 15. She said, ‘I’ve read a few books in the Waves series. They say they’re for 14-19 year olds and I agree with that. We’re not interested in the same things as people in their twenties and thirties. I like them and I think they look really good too. The only thing is that because bookshops put them in the children’s section, lots of teenagers won’t find them so they may not do very well. Reading test #1 для 8 класса. School in the Slums

  • Slums – трущобы
  • Locks – замки
  • Guards — охранники
  • Permission — разрешение

Mellish school is in the slums of Brooklyn for pupils between twelve and fifteen years of age. There are about 1500 pupils there, and 90 teachers.

It’s a problem school, perhaps one of the most difficult schools in America. The white teachers can’t walk to the school because they may be attacked. They all drive to school, and their cars have special locks. There’s always a black policeman at the door of the school. He has a radio contact with the school guards. Pupils must have a written permission from the teacher if they want to go to the toilet. There’s a guard outside the washroom. Only one child can go into the washroom at a time, and he can’t stay there long.

The children who live in that district go to that school. They are all black children. However, why do the teachers work there?

“It’s very hard of course,” says Jane Flinch, a forty- five-year-old teacher. Most children have problems at home. Some of them are beaten by their parents. Some of them sleep at the lessons because they had to work at night. Some of the children get sick at the lessons because they didn’t have breakfast or even a meal for a day or two.

It’s the love of the job that keeps the teachers in that school. They teach and do social work. They feel that they are doing something good for the children who need help.

“There’s also the problem of violence,” says one of the teachers. “Sometimes when I go into a class, I can feel that some of the children are like a dynamite. However, I feel quite safe. I am sure that other pupils will help me.” There is very little money for teaching in that school. There is no money to buy food for the children.

The principal of the school has been there for many years. A lot of his happy optimism has gone. “No, I’m not optimistic about the future. Look around you,” he says and points out of the window at the high wall round the school. ”It’s not a very bright sight: buildings have holes instead of the windows, shops are closed, groups of people are sitting on the steps of the houses. They have nowhere to go and nothing to do.”

“We need money,” he says, “money is the only way to help this school and these people, and, of course, jobs for the people.”

Текст для 8 класса #2. Presents for the Natives

Miklukho-Maclay was a Russian scientist and traveller who lived more than a year on the island of New Guinea. The ship came to the island in the evening of a September day in 1871. Next morning the captain said to Maclay:

“You are coming ashore. Why don’t you take more men with you? Have you a gun?”

“I don’t need a gun. I have presents for the natives.”

The island was beautiful. There were trees and flowers everywhere, and it was very hot. The sun shone brightly high above Maclay’s head. He walked for some time down a forest path. Suddenly he stopped because he heard a noise. A native stood in front of him. He looked at Maclay quickly and then started running away. Maclay ran after him. The native looked back and suddenly stopped. Maclay took out some presents and showed them to the man. The native took the presents and smiled. This was how Miklukho-Maclay met the first black man on the first day of his life in New Guinea. The native’s name was Tui. He was Maclay’s best friend all the time that the traveller lived on the island.

On the first of October Maclay started out for a walk in the forest. He carried no gun. He had only a notebook and a pencil. In the forest, he met a native boy who saw him and ran away. Maclay heard the voices of men and women and the cries of children. Suddenly many men with spears in their hands came out. They stopped and looked at Maclay angrily. When he tried to say something, one of the men wanted to throw his spear at him. Maclay did not know a word of their language. He could not explain that he was their friend. He knew that he had to do something quickly. And a good idea came to him. He suddenly sat down on the ground and began to take off his shoes. Then he lay down, put a bag under his head and … slept. The natives did nothing to him.

Тест по чтению по английскому языку 8 класс #3. The Olympic Champion Alexandr Medved Gives Advice

A wrestler must have many qualities to beat his rivals. He must be strong and very quick. Then he needs enough strength to tear the rival from the mat and throw him on the floor.

I will tell you about myself. I grew up tall and thin with no great strength in my arms. Wrestling came into my life when I was 18. I was 188 cm tall and weighed 85 kg and could not compete with my rivals in strength.

Then I decided to build up my muscles. I developed a system of exercises, which helped me to become stronger. I spent much time weight lifting. I lifted a bar equal to my own weight, which is up to 100 kg. However, that happened after two years of regular exercising. At first, the weight was only 30-40 kg. In general, I advise to choose the weight, which is twice as small as your own.

Push-ups were also of great help to me. At first, I could push up only 3 or 4 times, so weak were my arms! Then 30 times. Interesting enough, if you strengthen your legs, you feel as if your body has become much lighter. It is a very useful exercise. I also worked with dumb-bells and weights and threw heavy stones into air. You must combine muscle-building exercises with long distance running. It is a good relaxation for the arms and back muscles.

I was considered the strongest heavyweight wrestler in the world. However, I have never been the biggest among my rivals. I weighed a little over 100 kg but defeated even those who weighed 120, 150 and 180 kg like the American Chris Taylor whom I threw on the floor at the 1972 Olympics. If you are strong, you do not fear any rivals! My advice to you is if you want to be strong, take up physical exercises at once.

Online Shopping Чтение. 8 класс. 1 четверть

Fifty years ago most people didn’t even know what the Internet was. Today, the Internet is a collection of various services and resources. The Internet’s main components are e-mail and the World Wide Web. The Internet helps us in different ways. We can read lots of interesting things (encyclopedias, poems or even books), we can send letters or even, what is very popular recently, we can do shopping without leaving our houses. As internet shopping is so popular nowadays we need to be aware of its advantages and disadvantages.

Many people fear internet shopping because of its disadvantages. They claim that the worst things is that there is no guarantee of receiving the desired product. The seller can simply mail a pig in a poke and then the money is lost. They are right because that kind of things happen very often and we can’t do anything about it. So people should buy only from a reliable source. Another thing is that we have to pay for the delivery and it can be a really big price when the parcel is heavy or comes from overseas.

And what when the product is just not the thing we ordered? We have to send it back to the seller and pay for another post-delivery. And what about our health? People don’t go shopping, don’t walk but just sit in front of the screen. It affects not only our body but our eyes too. The effect is simple: more people wear glasses and internet shops sell more clothes in XXL size.

Another disadvantage is that there is less employment for shop assistants, security men, etc. Maybe it isn’t very visible now but it will be in the future. Still in spite of the disadvantages internet shopping becomes more and more popular, people are interested in buying by means of virtual shops. People can find the desired product much faster than in the shops. Another fine thing about internet shopping is that there is an enormous choice. Furthermore the products in the internet are cheaper than in the shops. But going shopping with your family or friends is much more fun than sitting in front of the screen.

1. The Internet is vitally important nowadays because it ____.

a) entertains people b) is an interesting way of communication

c) is good source of information d) has great collection of films

2. Online shopping is _______nowadays.

a) a rare thing b) only for technicians c) disadvantageous d) attractive to more and more people.

3. The main disadvantage is that _____ .

a) you never know what you really buy b) the things are more expensive

c) you never get the thing d) you pay twice the price

4. Internet shopping doesn’t guarantee _____ .

a) reliable source b) delivery c) low prices d) satisfaction

5. Online shopping is harmful for our ______

a) purse b) muscles c) brain d) imagination

6. Online shopping takes away ____.

a) our mind b) jobs c) creativity d) money

7. Shopping via the Internet is popular as it ____.

a) saves time b) is great fun c) looks like game d) improves computer skills.

8. The author recommends to go shopping with a company because it …………………….

a) saves time b) saves money c) is more enjoyable d) is safe

Tony Redford was a journalist. He wrote articles for a magazine called Business News. He was a young man, of medium height. He had rather long, dark brown hair and a small moustache. There was always a very serious look on his face. He looked even more serious that morning. He was in his boss’s office. His boss was called Liz Davis and she was the editor of Business News.

«Well, Tony. Your first article about the electronics industry is going to the printer’s this afternoon. It’s very interesting. But what about your second article? Are you sure you can write two articles about the electronics industry? I mean, isn’t one enough? » she asked. «Listen, Liz, I tell you that the second article is going to be more interesting than the first! Far more interesting! »

«I am going to get some information this evening about a small company called Shandor Electronics. The director is probably one of the best electronics engineers in the world. But nobody knows very much about him. Not even where he comes from. He lives on a yacht. He never visits his factory in Southampton. Someone goes to the yacht from the factory every morning in a helicopter. Now… I know an engineer who works at that factory. His name is Presley, and Presley tells me that Shandor has plans for a new kind of electronic brain. It’s much smaller but far better than any other electronic brains on the market today. I’m going to meet Presley in Southampton this evening. I am going to use the information I get from him in my second article. Presley says Shandor is going to make some new kind of robot, too. But he doesn’t know very much about that. It’s one of the company’s biggest secrets! »

Liz Davis looked more interested than before.

Read the text and do some tasks

Dear Boris,

Thanks for your nice letter.

1

You asked me how I was getting on with my English. Well, after I had spent a week with my English family, I slowly began to understand their English a little better. It’s very different from what I learned at school! Students in my group are from different cities of Britain and their dialects are different too! Some of their accents are quite strong and they also have their own words and expressions. I noticed that they love to talk about languages and especially about the different accents in different parts of Britain.

2

But it’s not only the language that’s different and surprising. Before I came to England I had thought that fish and chips were what most Englishmen ate every day. That’s quite wrong! I get rather mad now when I hear all that nonsense about typical English food.

I had expected to see “London fog”. Do you remember our texts about it? We had no idea that most of this “thick fog” disappeared many years ago when people stopped using coal in their homes. But the advice to speak about weather was very helpful. The weather in London is changeable indeed. Besides, people like talking about it.

3

On the other hand there are habits which are different. People tell me that what is typically British here in London is not always typical in Wales or Scotland. Local habits and traditions vary a lot here – very different from what we know in Russia

4

But what is common for all the countries of Britain is that they follow traditions. Probably Britain has more living symbols of its past than many other countries. The royal family is something out of a fairy tale. The capitals, big cities and countryside boast many ancient buildings, castles and cathedrals. Every year there are historical ceremonies, for example, the State Opening of Parliament, the Lord Mayor’s Show or the meeting of the Knights of the Garter at Windsor each St. George’s Day. These events are true representation of the past.

I will tell you more about Britain in my other letters.

Love from Britain,

Pete
