Is it easy to be young in the 21st century?

There is an opinion that youth is the best part of a person’s life. What is it – a fact or a stereotype? Happy Youth supporters’ arguments sound very convincing. According to them, when you are fifteen or sixteen, the future seems cloudless, the world around you is beautiful and friendly, and you feel strong and optimistic. Neither health nor other problems trouble you yet. You have the parents who protect and support you. You have friends who never betray you. Conflicts are certainly unavoidable, but they don’t last long, and it’s usually not a problem to survive through them. This is a conventional idea about young people. But is it true?

Psychologists insist that they have lots of work with teenagers. In their “happiest” years they have too many problems, and in most cases they don’t know how to solve them. They lack life experience and are not self-confident enough. They are often too categoric and can’t forgive other people’s faults and mistakes. A quarrel or misunderstanding can lead to serious suffering. “I don’t feel happy at all”, says Jack Green, 14. “I have no friends. It always works the same. At first it seems that I’ve found a real friend, but then I feel very disappointed because he betrays me – tells silly stories about me in the school, or doesn’t help when I need help. It has happened many times.”

“The thing which worries me a lot is my future job”, says Helen Carter, 15. “To have a good life in the future, I have to find a good job. If I want to find a good job, I have to get a good education first. But how am I supposed to choose my career line?! I don’t know what’s good and what’s bad for me. I cannot make an informal choice. I need to make some decision about my education very soon and I feel awfully scared. What if I make a mistake and get an education for a wrong job? This means that I’ll have to do the job which I don’t like or even hate. This makes me feel sick.”

On reading these words we, adults, realize that being young is not so easy. It’s rather challenging to be a teenager of the 21st century, when the world changes so rapidly and people have to work very hard to keep pace with it (успевать за ним). Who can help young people feel less stressed out and more self-confident? Who can provide them with information and advice? The answer, I suppose, is evident.

The author of the article thinks that the opinion that the youth is the best of human life may be true. He presents rather (1)_____________ arguments for the idea. The strongest argument is that teenagers have fewer

(2) _____________ in comparison with adult people, let along the elderly. And it goes without saying that healthy people feel stronger, more energetic, more optimistic and consequently happier than people in poor health.

However, the author also presents some facts which do not go with the (3) _____________ idea that “youth” and “happiness” are synonyms. Psychologists say that teenagers do have problems. Most of them are caused by their lack of (4) _____________ and lack of self-confidence Another typical teenage problem is that they cannot compromise. Looking for an ideal relationship they often feel bitterly (5) _____________ with their friends who are not able to meet high requirements.

Worries about the future career add up to the teenager syndrome. It’s extremely difficult for a 15-16 year old person to make an (6) _____________, as they don’t have enough information yet. At the end of the article the author concludes that being a teenager in our dynamic world is rather (7) _____________. Adults should realize that teenagers often need their support and advice.

She got into all the «right» parties. «To be popular, you have to be perfect – have the perfect clothes, the perfect hair, the perfect face. Forget having some zit on your face,» Melanie complains. « If you don’t look just like them, they rag on you». Plus, the mates pressure on her about drinking. «When they say, Drink, drink, drink, I say no…. and they know I mean it», she claims. «Then they say Oh, you’re so boring. You just come here and sit. But I feel I can have fun without having to do all of that», she says. «I stay in the group because i like being with them», says Melanie. «But now when they make fun of people, I tell them I don’t like it, and they respect me for that»

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890)

Nobody has ever paint cornfields or sunflowers like Van Gogh. His paintings are full of colour and sunlight. Today his painting are worth millions of pounds but in his lifetime he only sold one.

Van Gogh was born in Holland in 1853. He did not start painting until he was twenty-seven, ten years before he died. Before becoming a painter, he was a teacher, an art dealer and a church preacher.

In 1886 he left Holland and joined his younger brother, Theo, who was working in Paris at the time. After living there for two years, he moved to the warmer climate of Arles in the south of France. Here he painted some of his most famous pictures.

However, Van Gogh was mentally ill. During one of  his fits of madness he attacked his friend, the artist Paul Gaugyin. In another fit of madness, Van Gogh cut off part of his own ear. Eventually he went into a mental hospital but he did not get any better.

Finally, on Sunday 27th July 1890, in the small village of Auvers, north of Paris, Vincent Van Gogh took a gun, went into a cornfield and shoot himself. When his brother Theo arrived, he said: “I hope I did it property.” Thirty-six hours later Van Gogh died in his brother’s arms. His last words were ‘La tristesse durera’.

During the baking hot months of the summer holidays my mother and I used to escape to one of the scattered lakes north of Prince Albert. In its magic surroundings we used to spend the long summer days in the open air, swimming and canoeing or just lying dreaming in the sun. In the evening the lake was always a bright, luminous grey after the unbelievable sunset colours had faded.

The last summer before we returned to England was particularly enchanted. For one thing, I was in love for the first time. No one will ever convince me that one cannot be in love at fifteen. I loved then as never since, with all my heart and without doubts or reservations or pretence.

My boyfriend Don worked in Saskatoon, but the lake was ''his place'' – the strange and beautiful wilderness drew him with an obsessive urgency, so I suspected it was not to see me that he got on his motor-cycle as many Fridays as he possibly could, and drove three hundred-odd miles along the pitted prairie roads to spend the weekends at our place.

Sometimes he couldn't come, and the joy would go out of everything until Monday, when I could start looking forward to Friday again. He could never let us know in advance, as we were too far from civilization to have a phone or even a telegraph service. Three hundred miles in those conditions is quite a journey. Besides, Don was hard up, and sometimes worked overtime at weekends.

One Friday night a storm broke out. I lay in bed and listened to the thunder and the rain beating on the roof. Once I got up and stood looking out over the treetops, shivering. I tried not to expect Don that night hoping he would have enough sense to wait until the storm ended. Yet in my frightened thoughts I couldn't help imagining Don fighting the storm. His motorbike, which had always looked to me so heavy and solid, seemed in my thoughts frail enough to be blown onto its side by the first gust that struck it. I thought of Don pinned under it, skidding, his face pressed into the mud.

I crawled back into bed, trying to close my throat against the tears. But when my mother, prompted by the deep sympathy and understanding between us, came in to me, she kissed my cheek and found it wet.

"Don't get upset, Jane,'' she said softly. ''He may still come.''

When she had tucked me in and gone, I lay thinking about Don, about the danger of the roads … you couldn't ride or walk along them safely after heavy rain; your feet would slip from under you. The roads in Northern Canada are not like the friendly well-populated English ones, where there are always farmhouses within walking distance and cars driving along them day and night.

It was hours later, that I suddenly realized the sound of the roaring engine was real. The storm was dying. I lay absolutely still, relief and pain fighting for ascendancy within me, each in itself overwhelming enough to freeze the breath in my lungs as I heard Don's heavy tired footsteps on the wooden stairs.

Speaker A

I’ve always been very good at languages. I can speak English and French and it helps a lot as I’m in the export business. When we worked on some contracts with Russian companies, I decided to learn Russian. I take lessons regularly and I’ve learned a lot of words, but there are very difficult grammar rules in Russian, and there are so many exceptions! I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to speak it.

Speaker B

My friends don’t think that learning foreign languages is important – English is understood everywhere. I don’t agree with them. I want to start learning Italian. It’s a lovely language and it sounds beautiful. I’ve got a pen-pal Mario, who lives in Italy, and I want to go there next year. I think Mario will appreciate my speaking Italian. And travelling is more enjoyable when you can communicate with the locals in their language.

Speaker C

English is my native language and I don’t have any problems when I travel – people can speak English everywhere. That’s why I don’t feel motivated to learn foreign languages at school. But according to the curriculum, I must learn two foreign languages. We start learning the first one at the age of seven. Usually it’s French or German. At the age of 13 or 14 we choose the second language - Italian, Spanish, Chinese or others.

Speaker D

Languages are very important in modern life. But learning languages is very difficult and time consuming. The quickest way to learn a language is to go the country where it’s spoken. It works, however, only if you communicate outside the classroom a lot. Watching the news, reading newspapers and writing notes and emails helps a lot too. But the most important thing is not to speak your native language to anyone.

Speaker E

Lots of adults want to learn foreign languages but have no time for it. Children, on the other hand, have enough time but they lack motivation. The easiest way to get children to speak a foreign language is to use it in a game. Young children are not able to understand language rules, but they can easily imitate their teacher. Pictures and toys work very well too – children pick up new words for toys very quickly.

There is probably an average of 15 minutes of commercials in an hour-long program. If you exercised through each commercial break during just two hours of TV, you’d already have met the recommended amount of daily exercise necessary to reduce health risk.

3. Regular checkups are a valuable tool in maintaining good health. Taking proper care of your health at the right time can help avoid a lot of problems in the future. III вариант

A.Установите соответствие между заголовками A- H и текстами 1-7 . Используйте каждую букву только один раз. В задании один заголовок лишний.

A.Gifted Children Always Become Famous

B. Awareness of Giftedness

C. Special Attitude Is Required

D. Lack of Challenge May Cause Problems

E. Contrary to Popular Belief

F. Gifted Children Have no Support

G. Identifying the Gifted Children

H. Being Gifted Is not Always

1. Gifted children's behavior differs from that of their age- mates. Many gifted children learn to read early, with better comprehension of the nuances of language. As much as half of the gifted and talented population has learned to read before entering school. They can work independently at an earlier age and can concentrate for longer periods. They like to learn new things, are willing to examine the unusual, and are highly inquisitive.

2. Being academically gifted is a topic laced with myths and fears, many of which are unfounded. Moreover, academically gifted children often face special problems. So do their parents. Schools treat those children differently from those whose talents lie in other areas, like music, art, and sports. Gifted children may also be learning disabled, or have another disability while being highly intelligent.

3. Social and emotional difficulties are not directly linked to giftedness. Rather, they result from a lack of understanding by the child of the nature of their intellectual difference. Parents and teachers don’t usually discuss this difference with them because of the concern that they get a ‘swelled head’. The risk is that gifted children may view their differences as ‘weird’ or ‘bad’ or try to ignore or deny them.

4. Most of the athletes are allowed to develop their special skills at whatever rate best suits them. No one tries to stop them from becoming much better baseball players or swimmers than their classmates. Yet if an academically gifted child tries to do two years of work in one, that's viewed as potentially harmful. Much of the concern focuses on the non-academic areas of these gifted children's development.

5. Researchers emphasize that for the vast majority of academically gifted children those concerns are groundless. In fact, these children are more likely to develop social and even academic problems if they don’t feel intellectually challenged. If gifted children don’t go to challenging programs, they may not learn how to learn. Eventually, in college or graduate school, they feel emotionally overwhelmed when they can't just coast through their courses anymore.

6.Gifted children represent both a challenge and a resource for schools. Educators have a responsibility to provide programs to meet the educational needs of gifted students who are capable of learning at advanced levels. Ideally, schools should have specifically trained teachers for gifted students to create a challenging and supportive learning environment for these children.

7. Gifted children are often viewed as ‘the smart ones’ who should know everything. Yet, being gifted does not mean they possess great abilities in every area. Albert Einstein was 4 years old before he spoke a word. Winston Churchill failed the 6th grade, and Leo Tolstoy flunked out of college. What do these three famous people have in common? In fact, they are all considered gifted, and in some cases, geniuses.

B. Выберите правильную форму глагола.

1. In the earliest days of computers, the only computer education was about computers. We and computers have come a long way since those days. Now computers have invaded every aspect of modern life. Education is no exception. Students can use word processors for writing, spreadsheets for mathematics and science, and databases for organizing information. Lately, the Internet has become a recognized way of getting information.

2. There are many advantages to distance learning. For homeschoolers, it's a great way to safely get a head start on college before completing high school. In addition, many students don’t have the ability to leave home for maybe family or work obligations. Another huge advantage is the cost savings. Through distance learning, you avoid room and board fees that will have to be paid by a traditional student.

3. In Great Britain many children go to boarding schools. A boarding school can be an excellent placement for an orphaned child, because everyone is treated equally and fairly there. Many parents with non-traditional careers or those undergoing difficult transitions like divorce find boarding schools excellent alternatives. Boarding school can help children grow in independence, and friendships formed in boarding schools often last a lifetime.

4. Considered by many to be a diamond in the rough of the Parkside area, the school boasts a curriculum that encourages technological literacy. The 170 local 9th grade students don’t carry any books or pencils. The school supplies every student with their own laptop. They create multimedia presentations with Microsoft PowerPoint, receive assignments via e- mail, and conduct research online. So far, the unique program has had positive results,

5. Chorister's schools are educational establishments which have a special emphasis on religious choir singing. These schools are usually attached to a cathedral, church or chapel, where the school choir sings. Choir schools do not exclusively educate choristers: about 15,000 pupils are taught at chorister schools in the UK, but only around 1,000 of those are choristers. Tony Blair, for example, attended the Chorister School but was not himself a Chorister.

6. For the majority of college and university students, involvement in extracurricular activities plays an essential role in the collegiate experience. Students become involved in extracurricular activities not only for entertainment, social and enjoyment purposes, but most importantly, to gain and improve skills. A wide and diversified range of extracurricular activities exist on US campuses, meeting a variety of student interests.

7. The test is an important benchmark in ensuring that students will be successful in meeting the challenges they will face either in college or the workplace. If they are not able to meet the standards of the exam, how can we expect them to be successful in life? Examinations can be traumatic for both and their teachers. But just because nobody really enjoys them, we should not disregard them as a necessary part of the education process.
