The Christmas Tree

No one knows for sure who decorated the first Christmas tree. The custom of bringing an evergreen tree indoors and decorating it at Christmas started in Germany. One legend says that Martin Luther started the practice. Luther was an important Christian leader. According to the story, he noticed the starlit sky as he walked home one Christmas Eve about the year 1513. He thought the stars looked as if they were shining on the branches. When he arrived home, Martin Luther placed a small fir tree inside his house. He decorated it with lighted candles.

Decorating Christmas trees became popular in Germany. Prince Albert of Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha, the German husband of Queen Victoria, took the tradition to England. Both German and English people brought it to America. And now nearly every family in Great Britain and the USA has a Christmas tree.

It is found in fresh fruit and green vegetables, such as oranges, blackcurrants, lettuce. Brussels sprouts and spinach also contain a lot of vitamin C.

4.__________

Vitamin D helps our bones to grow strong and hard, and we are able to make it for ourselves if our skin gets enough sunlight.  But we can also get vitamin D if we eat fish, milk, butter, cheese and margarine. Some people buy pills or tablets vitamins. But most of us get more than enough of them from our food.

According to UNESCO, four of ten African cannot read and write. That is a total of 136 million people. If people could read, their lives would be a lot easier. If people read the labels on the medicine bottles, they wouldn’t take the wrong number of pills. If farmers had their legal documents, they would get more money for their products. If women learnt how to read, they would teach their children too.

One problem with teaching people to read is language. Africans often speak several languages. There are thousands of local languages as well as each country’s official language. One thing everybody agrees on is that things wouldn’t go on like this. We have to do something!

Choose TRUE or FALSE. Correct false statements.

                                                Ключи:

The Appalachian Trail is a track which extends from Springer Mountain in the state of Georgia, in the south of the United States, travels through several other states and ends in the northern state of Maine at Mount Katahdin. The trail is fairly recent in origin. In 1921 Massachusetts forester Benton MacKaye had the idea of connecting a series of farms and wilderness camps for city dwellers to enjoy. Two years later the first section was opened.

At around 2,178 miles long, the Appalachian Trail is America’s longest marked footpath. It takes about 5,000,000 footsteps to walk the entire length of the trail. It is also home to more than 2,000 rare, threatened and endangered species of plant and animal life. The trail has more than 250 shelters and camp sites available for walkers. The shelters are about a day’s walk apart and are often near a water source. Walkers can also take their own tents if they do not wish to use one of the shelters. One of the largest animals on the trail is the American black bear which inhabits all the regions covered by the Appalachian Trail. However, the black bear usually avoids humans and is easily frightened away by loud noises. There are other dangers along the trail, including poisonous rattlesnakes, which are commonly found in the state of Connecticut.

You can take your pet dog with you but it must be on a lead at all times. Similarly, fires can only be lit in certain areas, usually near the shelters along the way. Additionally, no cars, bicycles or horses are allowed in the wilderness areas. Walkers are encouraged to take their rubbish home; continued observation of these simple rules will help protect the beauty of the Appalachian Trail for everyone to enjoy.
